Dr. Seth A. Mensah, MB ChB MSc DPM MRCPsych

Dr. Seth A. Mensah is a Neuropsychiatrist with Consultant responsibility for the Welsh Neuropsychiatry Service which is the only regional tertiary Neuropsychiatry service for Wales. He is trained and experienced in assessing the effects of both psychologically and physically traumatic events including brain damage upon an individual’s mental state, cognitive, behavioural and personality.

He has worked at the specialist regional Welsh Neuropsychiatry Service for the past 10 years and is currently the only full-time Neuropsychiatrist for NHS Wales. He also works in close partnership with specialist regional neuroscience and neurorehabilitation services in the region.

There are well over 200 referrals to the Service each year and, he currently has well over 500 patients with neuropsychiatric problems under his care in his clinical practice. This is made up largely of patients with acquired brain injuries, post-brain injury and other complex forms of epilepsy, a number with somatoform disorders or other neuropsychiatric conditions that overlap both organic and functional diagnostic domains.

His clinical duties involve managing the inpatient service, the Day Rehabilitation Unit, Liaison neuropsychiatric input into the University and General Hospitals in the South Wales region mainly.

Dr Mensah is widely experienced in the assessment and treatment of the sequelae of brain damage, which is central to neuropsychiatry. He has a particular interest in the Neuropsychiatric consequences of Traumatic Brain Injuries, Neuropsychiatric aspects of Epilepsy, Cognitive (Memory) Disorders, Functional Neurological Symptoms, Organic Psychiatric conditions and Neuropsychiatric Disorders following various Neurological Illnesses.

He has experience in interviewing and preparing medico-legal reports. He has at least 10 years experience in medico-legal neuropsychiatric assessments and has prepared reports mostly for claimants.

He is on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register (His GMC registration number is 5193016) and also approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act (1983), as having special experience in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders.

Dr Mensah is a member of a number of professional and national bodies in the UK including the Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK). He also has the Master of Psychiatry degree, and the Postgraduate Diploma in Psychological Medicine from the Conjoint Board of the Royal College of Surgery in Ireland and the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland.

Medico-legal Practice

Dr Mensah has over 10 years’ experience in writing reports for the courts. He provides rapid reports in civil (Claimant, Defendant or Joint) and criminal cases for solicitors and has expertise in providing expert neuropsychiatric reports on personal injury, mental capacity and fitness to plead among other medico-legal issues. He is available for instruction by solicitors and is committed to providing an appointment to the client within 4 weeks of receiving instructions to prepare reports.

He operates from a number of consultation rooms in South Wales but is willing to travel and assess patients in their own homes across the country.
